Leuven, 1993: Medieval Magic. Flemish Miniatures Before Van Eyck (ca. 1380-ca. 1420) For a long time there was a dearth of data on Southern Netherlandish art of the pre-Eykian period, though clearly there must have been an intense activity before 1420. High-quality illumination was one of the most vigorous artistic branches. Wealthy burgesses of Flanders commissioned the making of manuscripts and Southern Netherlandish illumination was greatly prized by an international clientele. The exhibition showed the results of groundbreaking new research.
