The research objectives of Illuminare - Centre for the Study of the Illuminated Manuscript focus especially on Southern Netherlandish manuscript production from around 1350 to 1550: gothic illumination, the so-called pre-Eyckian illumination, Burgundian book illumination and the Ghent-Bruges tradition. The history of conservation, bookbindings, printmaking and 19th-century book illumination are also studied. Research takes the form of research and doctoral projects. The results are published at national and international level.
Illuminare - Centre for the Study of the Illuminated Manuscript also publishes its own series – the Corpus of Illuminated Manuscripts.
