Professor Dr Jan Van der Stock
Jan Van der Stock (1959) studied at the Catholic University of Leuven (K.U.Leuven, 1977-1982) and obtained his doctorate in 1995 with a thesis on the development of the printed image in the 15th and 16th centuries (Printing images in Antwerp: the introduction of printmaking in a city: fifteenth century to 1585 (Studies in Prints and Printmaking, 2), Rotterdam, 1998). At present he is a full time senior lecturer. From 1999 to 2004 he was also special professor of Printmaking and Drawing at Leiden University.
Jan Van der Stock has made several major exhibitions. The first of these, Stad in Vlaanderen. Cultuur en maatschappij 1477-1787 (at the request of the Flemish government), was shown in 1991 in Brussels and Vienna. In 1993 he was project leader of the seven historical exhibitions of Antwerp93. Cultural Capital of Europe. In 1996 and 1997, with Maurits Smeyers, and once again at the request of the Flemish government, he made the exhibition Flemish Illuminated Manuscripts 1475-1550 (St Petersburg, Hermitage Museum; Florence, Museo Bardini and Antwerp, Royal Museum of Fine Arts). In 2002 he was chairman of the organizing committee of the exhibition Medieval Mastery. Book Illumination from Charlemagne to Charles the Bold (800-1475) (Leuven). His publications focus primarily on printmaking.
Jan Van der Stock lectures on printmaking, iconography, iconology and medieval art. He is the director of Illuminare - Centre for the Study of the Illuminated Manuscript (K.U.Leuven).
