Dr. Bart Fransen
Bart Fransen (1973) studied Art History at the University of Leuven and at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid. By participating in projects at several museums and research institutes, he developed a specialization in 15th century art of the Southern Netherlands. He collaborated in a Jeroen Bosch exhibition (2000) in the Prado Museum, Madrid. He co-authored the catalogue “The Flemish Primitives” at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium. He acted as Scientific Secretary at the Centre for the Study of the Flemish Primitives. He is attached to Illuminare - Centre for the Study of Medieval Art (KU Leuven) and was a member of the scientific committee for the exhibition “Rogier van der Weyden. The Master of Passions” (2009). He attained his PhD in 2009 with a thesis investigating stone sculpture in Brussels during the lifetime of Rogier van der Weyden. He is currently performing research at the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage on panel painting preceding Jan Van Eyck.
The mainstay of his publications and lectures are on the topic of 15th century art in the Southern Netherlands and the relation between the diverse art forms.
