Welcome to the Illuminare website

 

Illuminare - Centre for the Study of Medieval Art is an academic and documentation centre at the University of Leuven (KU Leuven).

Illuminare - Centre for the Study of Medieval Art studies and provides accessibility to illuminated manuscripts produced in the Southern Netherlands from around 1350 to 1550.

Illuminare - Centre for the Study of Medieval Art was founded in 1983 by the late Professor Maurits Smeyers. From its inception the study centre has carried out research, provided education and offered expertise. At present Illuminare is directed by Professor Jan Van der Stock and has a staff of 15 associates.

Magnificent Middle Ages. The Museum Plantin-Moretus' finest manuscripts

The Museum Plantin-Moretus/ Print Room and Illuminare - Centre for the Study of Medieval Art published a catalogue of the illuminated manuscripts in the collection. The 15 finest manuscripts from the 9th untill the 15th century will be on show in this exhibition.

Conservation of the Anjou Bible completed

After an extensive international research and conservation project lasting more than four years, the 14th-century Neapolitan manuscript, renowned as the Anjou Bible, will be returning permanently to the renovated Treasure Room of the Maurits Sabbe library, at the Faculty of Theology and Religion (KU Leuven).
